Steering Column Restoration

I’m going to do a restoration on my fixed column on my 1968 Cougar. Anybody got some advise on what I need to replace or restore?

It appears to be only an upper bearing in the steering column. It seems to be fine, however should I go ahead and replace it? Also, is there a way to bench test the turn signal switch?

Some where on the site there was a really good post about someone restoring their 68 column. I tried to find it, but have not yet.

When I rebuilt my column I replaced all the foam seals with a kit I got from DeadNutsOn. I reused the bearing and the rubber piece it sits in.

Yes, I cannot imagine the bearing ever wearing out. Clean and repack with grease.

This is the thread I followed when I rebuilt my column: https://cccforum.discoursehosting.net/t/wacked-steering-column/5085/1

That’s the one I was looking for! :wall: That is a good thread.

Thanks Guys!

Back to working on my column and I have a few questions.

How do you separate the inner tube from the outer tube?

It seems like my steering shaft is pretty sloppy at the lower end of the column. Does the C9AZ-3E629-A Insulator take up the slack? https://secure.cougarpartscatalog.com/store/p/14210-Insulation-Steering-Column-Lower-Tube-New-1968-1972-Mercury-Cougar-1968-1972-Ford-Mustang.html?sessionthemeid=26

Some pictures on the thread “Wacked steering column” shows a cover that covers the turn signal wiring. I don’t have that on my column, is mine missing or was that on certain columns?

All the 68 Cougars left the factory with a cover over the wiring harness. They are different between a regular column and a tilt column. I have an extra one here for a regular column.

Putting my steering column back together and I don’t remember what connected to the 2 nuts inside the collar. Can someone enlighten me?
