Manual Trans Conversion

Looking for options for changing from auto to manual.
Besides tremec kits and swapping out to an old top loader
What other options are available? Seems to be plenty of 80’s through 2000 mustang transmissions for next to nothing. ANyone had any luck swapping out a newer mustang tranny?

The T5 5-speeds are a popular swap, but I have heard that powershifting them from 2-3 frequently results in busted gears. Most guys that have them seem to really like them. Rear gearing is going to be important if you go to an OD transmission like this, and you would have to be careful to get the right model of T5. They were used in tons of different applications, and not all of them are going to stand up to performance use very well. The WC (World Class) T5 used in Mustangs would probably be the one you want.

Personally, I have always liked the old Toploader. They don’t care how you drive them, have great feel, don’t steal much power, and they last forever. There’s a reason people recognize the name.

Just dropped my 3-speed toploader for a Tremec T5. Can’t wait to get it back!

This is my thread on swapping a T-5Z in to my 70 XR-7 hardtop. I think there are a few others here too. Kind of gloss over the first couple pages until you get to the transmission swap.

Link…?

Opps, could have sworn I had that in there. It’s there now.

And a link to my thread on the same topic:

From some research a while ago, the five-speeds from Mustangs between the T5 and modern day T-56/6060s had integral bellhousings that won’t allow them to bolt to anything other than a Modular engine. This includes the T-45 and T-3650, which are the strong ones that otherwise you would want to use.

Hope This Helps,

I’m doing a auto to manual conversion on my 67. Really it comes down to two points on the trans choice if you are on a budget. You can go top loader 4spd or t5 5spd. The common T5’s are only safe to about 300hp and you get to run a higher rear gear(3:73) and still drive on the freeway. The top loader will hold whatever you throw at it but will need to keep the 3.00 rear to be able to drive on the freeway as the 4th is 1:1.
