Ok,
I’m putting in a replacement Classic Air A/C System, soup to nuts.
I’m looking at the compressor installation instructions and notice a few extra parts.
Then I look at my car…Things aren’t matching up.
I found this pix on the internet, same year and engine as mine…The 2 Red Arrows are pointing at a mount and an idler That aren’t on my car? The car came to me without hoses or a belt to the compressor so until now, I had no idea about these parts.
The first picture shows a 351C Frankensteined together in a 1970 Mustang. A/C set up is what looks like on 1971-73, same with steering cooler. Power steering brackets might be from a full sized Ford.
Mike are you using the Sanden Compressor? Classic Air should have an adapter bracket for your 1969 Compressor bracket.
My 69 XR 7 (351W) did not originally have air conditioning. I installed a Classic Auto Air system in the car and used the compressor bracket that came with the kit. I drive the compressor using the same belt as power steering pump with a longer belt, no idler. It generally works Ok but sometimes the belt slips due to insufficient wrap around the pulleys.
BTW I changed lower dash and use factory vents inside.
As I suspected and researched, the reason I’m looking for alternatives is the part shows out of stock with back in stock as unknown, I also think I need the Idler pulley. and before I go all in, I’m trying to be damn sure.
Sorry posted before I saw you had a '69, yeah you’d have to try and source a 69-style lateral support bracket as Cougar Bill mentioned if you want to stay with the 1969 configuration. The parts above are the 1970 setup.
Yep, it’s off a 1969, and the pulley spins by hand easily. However it is strongly recommended to swap out the $3 bearing in it for the long haul. These things are 50 years old now and they all fail eventually.
$75 for both as pictured plus actual shipping from 10598
When you go to swap out the bearing, be sure to watch the video Don at WCCC did showing how to press out the bearing without damage. You’ll have to search out the YouTube link, or go to his channel. Easy to swap without pulley damage.
Another Cougar A/C part missing from my car. I’m pretty sure all the previous people who worked on this car never expected the A/C to ever be used again.
If you’re going to run a Sanden compressor you won’t need that extra idler. That was added to control belt slap caused by the York/Tecumseh style compressors, it’s not a problem on Sanden style compressors.
