*This is not a Hertz Eliminator, but had a factory sunroof added from a donor car during restoration in the 1990’s.

Now on SF Bay CraigsList for $8500…

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/6135858292.html

*Appears to have matching number / VIN-stamped transmission as well!

So tempted. Been itching lately to find the next project Cougar to line up for a full restoration but don’t have the extra space for it these days. This is a great project!

I agree! And at $8500, where will you find another one like it? Lets talk numbers…

1970 Eliminator…
68 were Competition Orange with 351C-4V and 4-speed (wide and close ratio total)
31 of those had the close-ratio 4-speed, with 20 of them equipped with black standard interior (1A)

So using just the big picture items it is 1 of 20 in that combination.

The Eliminator Registry shows…
17 recorded with 351C-4V, 4-speed, Competition Orange.
6 of those have the close-ratio 4-speed.
All 6 of those cars also have the black standard interior.

So it is 1 of 6 similar cars currently recorded in the Eliminator Registry (i.e. “known to exist” ~ although technically some recorded VINs are known to have been scrapped, or are recorded from paperwork-only).

This doesn’t even take into account the combination of AC + 4-speed. Still talking 1970 Eliminators specifically: we know that there were zero 428CJ / 4-speeds built with AC. We also know that there were zero Boss 302 (all 4-speeds, of course) built with AC. That leaves only the 351C / 4-speed cars as possibly having the AC + 4-speed combination. Unfortunately I don’t have official numbers on that combination :-/

Sold today for $44k (hammer price)! Wow, it had a S-L-O-W start, and I was wondering if someone was going to snag it for $25k!

Interesting… Perhaps the available buyers were mismatched with the sale day & time. Or, maybe the Cougar had some issues? Hard to say, and just guesses without being there. Indy Mecum is only an hour away from me, but I was unable to attend.

Thanks for the tip!

9F91R571603

*This one came out of Texas in 2015, where it had been stored behind a barn for 20+ years! The previous owner wanted a Cougar that she could fix up and cruise around in, so she traded a lawn mower + trailer for it. At the time it had no drivetrain, and turned out to be more of a project than she could handle, so she offered it for sale. Mike snapped it up and started gathering parts and sheetmetal, but plans change and now he is offering it for sale.

In 1969 they built 18 Eliminators equipped with the Ram-Air 428 Super Cobra Jet engine and 4-speed close-ratio manual transmission. Only 9 of those cars are currently recorded in the Eliminator Registry, and of those only 2 are Bright Yellow. 9F91R571603 is one of those two.

A heads up, This one will be back on the market soon. Only now it will be detailed and some repairs done to it.

More info when I have it.

One of the interesting things on the is it sole new in New Jersey, but has the California emissions package on it.

Anything happen to this one, or is it still on the market…?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-Mercury-Cougar-/222454779458?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&nma=true&si=a%252FWeuvUPIiqWW15sURLOgP6e1Do%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

It IS an oddity! iirc, it has an Export DSO (hence the shipping to NJ). So possibly ordered by a GI either through a CA dealership, or to take delivery in CA? Would be interesting to learn more about the history.

Supposed to be a 2 (or 3 now) owner car, so contact with the original owner should not be too difficult (if he is still with us).

Can’t wait to hear more about it Neal!

M.

As far as I know it is still on the Cars Online site, but I haven’t checked in a few weeks.

Relisted on eBay, with $8k Buy Now.
